Quick Ways to Bring Life to Your Work
Did you know that 13 million working days are lost every year because of stress related illnesses? According to an article by Business Insider, we spend on average 90,000 hours at work in our lifetime, being stress and demotivated is not good for anybody. If we know work stress causes days to be lost, why not create an office environment that helps reduce this? Employers are wanting offices that serve a function before form purpose and sometimes we forget that a well-designed office with some elements of ‘fun’ can in-fact motivate employees and also improve their productivity, and sometimes it’s the small things that can bring big changes in your workplace.
Bring Some Nature into Work: the benefits of incorporating biophilic design into workplace strategy is gaining wide spread recognition. We have been surrounded by nature and everybody wants a small slice of it wherever they go. But you don’t have to run to the next forest in-order to work. Whether it’s real, artificial or a combination of both, the addition of plants is a great way to bring the outside, inside.
Blowing in the wind: the air in the office can have a considerable impact on wellbeing, therefore creating a multisensory experience is very powerful and adding strategically placed fans can mimic the outside wind and make employees fans of your workplace!
Lights, Camera, Action: Spatial configuration can be pivotal in creating a bright and airy atmosphere, it can help improve access to natural light, whilst reducing distractions. The key to getting this right is adding variety. We don’t all need uniform bright white lighting all the time, throughout the office and through the day.
Tasteful décor and Artwork: Natural materials such as wood, leather, cotton etc. all age well and can stimulate our senses of touch. Similarly, artwork that depicts nature can be exciting and thought-provoking. Another way to bring life is to use quotes on walls as these can help motivate and fill empty spaces, with the added benefit of being interchangeable.
By having an office that combines the concept of biophilic design and quick fixes we mentioned we can be sure office employee’s wellbeing is prioritised and we can hope to have reduced the number of working days lost due to stress related illnesses. By doing so, motivation and productivity is also increased.
