Creating an Optimised Open Plan Environment

For many of us, working in an open plan office is now the norm as companies have phased out of the closed-off cubicles culture decades ago. Since the implementation of open plan culture; the wider space and better social interactions have been hailed as the solution to creating a more harmonious and creative environment for workers. But a recent study (Scandinavian Journal of Work, environment & Health) has suggested that actually the opposite is happening.

Employees are unsatisfied with the lack of utility in the space and overall not meeting their needs to make collaborative working happen as efficiently as possible. They can also be distracted by noise which present big challenges in the workplace. “Ambient noise and lack of personal space can make it hard for employees to concentrate and get things done,” says Jeff Lowe, vice president of marketing at Smart Technologies. So, what are the main things we need to think about when considering implementation of a successful open-plan office.

Workers want the ability to focus on work without interruptions when it comes to office design, having spots to sit down and concentrate on work is important, an open plan office should consider this and utilise the space wisely. Employees are expected to be connected to the office all the time – but only 40% say the devices they use at home integrate seamlessly with their work tools. When designing an office space, the integration of technology is crucial, better office environment and workplace technology should improve productivity, engagement and happiness at work.

Overall, a good workplace design takes employees needs into consideration and facilitates activities that enhance productivity, and by using smart technology companies can make a conscious effort to help people manage their challenges of noise and open space. These collaborative technologies can only work if companies build a culture that respects employees quite time. Ultimately, the investment in a well-designed and well thought of office plan can have tremendous impact on the bottom-line performance of the business as well as the personal growth of their employees.
